A Pervacive Form of Urban Fraud - FREE DELIVERY
You've all seen it. Every time you go for Chinese food or pizza, it's there.
I'm talking about the ubiquitous "Free Delivery" sign. Nice idea. But, many times this is just false advertising. Fraud.
Why fraud, you say? Becuase, often, that 'free delivery' sign is sitting right next to another sign - and that sign says: '10% off for take out.'
Think about it. If I buy a hundred dollars of Chinese food and have it delivered, it costs $100. But, if I go pick it up, it only costs $90. How on Earth is that FREE?!?
In this case, 'free delivery' is ten percent more!
Actually it's much worse than that! It's not 10% more. To be correct, 'pick up' is 10 percent less and delivery is 11.1111111111% more!
Why all the one's you say? Because, in the example above, pick-up is $90 and 'free delivery' is $100 - that's 10/90 percent higher - or 11.11111 repeater, to use the correct mathematics...
I always try and explain this to the people who perpetrate this insidious fraud on the world's diners to little or no avail. The conversation is usually punctuated by blank stares and massive repetition of the phrases: 'No, is free!' 'We no charge delivery!' 'Fuck you, is free!' and 'Get hell out my store!'
